Our Story
“Have you thought about taking some time to make art?”
My first thought was ‘No’.
I was sitting in the Intensive Care Unit for babies, with my son who had just been born and needed an operation within 24 hours of being born.
It was an incredibly stressful time in my life, so when one of the kind members of the medical team asked me what I was doing to take care of myself, the last thing I expected was the suggestion to make art.
At first, I brushed the idea aside, but after much encouragement from the hospital team, I took 2 hours and spent the time drawing. I was surprised how quickly the 2 hours passed and how refreshed I was by the end of it. And I was incredibly grateful for the suggestion.
Once we were able to leave the hospital and bring our newborn son home, I tried to build a weekly creative habit that would allow me to look after myself by drawing or painting.
While I was incredibly surprised by how much better I felt after each time, maybe I should not have been. Countless studies have shown that making art can offer huge benefits from stress relief to building confidence. With this in mind, we’ve set up Brushtime as a place for anyone to take a break from their busy lives, have a chance to disconnect, and feel better.
