Beautiful work, James! Thanks for sharing James-nice use of color. I appreciate how you use the light vs dark shading even on the tassels. That is a detail that totally slipped my mind!
Nice work, Maria! Thank you for sharing your sketch with us! You did a great job with the reflecting of the light on the lanterns-capturing the shadows perfectly!

Oh Luda! I am enamored by the smoothness of your shading…I want to be like you when I grow up…seriously! I struggle with this but you have mastered it. Looks so smooth…so soothing!
Oh my, Carr! You managed to capture such depth and dimension in your sketch, and the texture on your branch is amazing. Your lanterns seem to be blowing gently in the breeze. We are so glad you found the session relaxing and fun!
Hi Dawn! Thank you for sharing with us Wow-I LOVE the pastel colors! It didn’t occur to me to move beyond the traditional red and gold but this is fabulous!
Thank you for joining us, Rochelle! And thank you for sharing your sketch with us-one detail that jumped out at me is the spacing between the decorations on your tassels-it adds a nice touch and the strength of your branch. Nice work!
Mica, this feels so celebratory with such beautiful contrast in the rich red lanterns and curved branch. You have created such a lovely scene. So glad you joined us!
HNY!!! I love how your branch frames the lanterns and the gentle shading makes them feel full and rounded, so steady and calm. Such a great piece to welcome the new year.

Happy lunar new year everyone!
Thank you so much Shivani🫂
Happy Lunar New Year, Pallavi! Your lanterns feel bright and celebratory, in fact your entire sketch makes me feel so happy! I especially love the striped one in the center, it has such a festive tone. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us.
If this is ‘messy,’ then messy is magical. I don’t see messy at all, Shennandoah! I see bold lines, personality, and a lantern design that’s completely your own. The floral details inside are such a beautiful touch. Keep leaning into your style, because it’s wonderful.
Annie, your lanterns have such soft, smooth shading. And the branch framing them is beautifully done-so elegant in the way it stretches across the page. We’re so glad you were part of the session.

A splash of a color today. Happy Year of the Fire Horse, everyone!
I used a splash of color today too, Marcus! (translate that to “I remembered to find my colored pencils before class) Happy Year of the Fire Horse to you! Nice work on your lanterns and the use of different shades of red to bring in the lighting. I also like the way you brought texture to your branch!

So glad you enjoyed the session, Kin! I love your lanterns, I love the additional details at the base of your lanterns, and I want to ask you what the writing on your lantern says…please share!
Hello Shay, thank you. This phrase is commonly written on lanterns used in temples. Traditionally, it means “favorable weather (wind and rain) for the crops.” The modern meaning would be a prosperous year. 🙂
We are so glad you enjoyed the session, Nicola! I have to say-your sketch is amazing and I love that you have branches coming in from different directions. It creates such a sense of realism!!!
Hollie, welcome! We’re so glad you joined us for your first session. Your branch structure is beautifully done, and the lanterns have such soft dimension. Hope this is the first of many!
Oh, the Koi! The fish detail makes it feel like a story is happening. Mel, this is gorgeous shading, and I absolutely adore the details, they add so much charm. So glad you joined us!
Ana Paula, this makes my heart happy. Two different styles, two beautiful expressions… and shared with a friend. That’s exactly what this space is about. I love seeing both interpretations side by side. The fiery glow in one and the cool, calm shading in the other create such a beautiful contrast. Thank you both for sharing your creativity.
Karina, I love the richness of your pencil work. The darker outer edges and soft blending give your lanterns such a strong form. Wonderful work. Thank you so much for sharing!
Nyasha, I love that you explored adding color. The richness you created makes the lanterns feel vibrant and full. It takes courage to experiment, and you did it beautifully!
Jermaine, your main lantern has great volume and your shading really makes it pop. I also love the personal touches! We’re so glad you were part of today’s session.
