What a great subject! With so many species and morphs of butterflies to choose from, I felt that we had an enormous amount of freedom to make these drawings our own. Today I tried out my new oil pastel set that I picked up from my local art museum this week. I found the medium quite approachable and an easy way to add texture and vibrancy to a drawing.

Thank you Shivani and Shay for another wonderful drawing event. I found that the beauty in my butterfly was that the wings were not perfectly symmetrical, but I enjoyed the challenge of attempting both sides. I’m not sure if you guys post the topics before the sessions start, but I find myself waiting in anticipation to discover what the topic of the day will be. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Shawleen, this is a beautiful butterfly. I really like the contrast you created between the lighter and darker sections of the wings, and the markings along the edges give it a very elegant look. You’re absolutely right that butterflies in nature are rarely perfectly symmetrical, and sometimes those small differences actually make the drawing feel more natural and interesting.
And thank you for your kind words. Right now we usually keep the topic as a little surprise until the session begins, but I love hearing that you look forward to discovering it each time. That sense of anticipation is part of the fun!
Genny, this is wonderful, especially for a first time working with color. The blue and warm brown tones create a really nice contrast, and the circular markings in the wings stand out beautifully. The darker border also helps frame the butterfly and makes the colors feel even richer.
Thank you for sharing your work with us – Question for you- how did it feel experimenting with color?
I was tempted to try colors today, but felt a bit intimidated by all of the options!
Having so many choices definitely comes with a cost! You still managed to create something beautiful with the limited color range that you gave yourself.
Awe Thanks Marcus! I’m my own worst critic, so I appreciate your kind words!

The oil pastels create a strong sense of texture and color, and the blue butterfly stands out nicely against the bright green background. The tree trunk also adds a nice sense of place to the scene.
It is great to see how you explored both the subject and the materials. Thank you for sharing your work with the group.
I have always said that I wasn’t an artistic person, but Shovani’s instructions make drawing so easy that I love the end product! I ❤️ these sessions!
Chely, this is a wonderful butterfly. The wing structure is very clearly defined, and the darker patterned edge creates a strong frame for the lighter sections of the wings. The vertical lines inside the wings add a nice sense of form and symmetry.
It is great to hear that the instructions helped you feel confident with the drawing. Your work shows careful observation and attention to detail. Thank you for sharing it with the group. And I would definitely say you are an artistic person!
We’re so glad you’re drawing with us.
First time I’ve tried with colours
Genny, this is wonderful, especially for a first time working with color. The blue and warm brown tones create a really nice contrast, and the circular markings in the wings stand out beautifully. The darker border also helps frame the butterfly and makes the colors feel even richer.
Thank you for sharing your work with us – Question for you- how did it feel experimenting with color?
