What a great subject! With so many species and morphs of butterflies to choose from, I felt that we had an enormous amount of freedom to make these drawings our own. Today I tried out my new oil pastel set that I picked up from my local art museum this week. I found the medium quite approachable and an easy way to add texture and vibrancy to a drawing.

Thank you Shivani and Shay for another wonderful drawing event. Shawleen, this is a beautiful butterfly. I really like the contrast you created between the lighter and darker sections of the wings, and the markings along the edges give it a very elegant look. You’re absolutely right that butterflies in nature are rarely perfectly symmetrical, and sometimes those small differences actually make the drawing feel more natural and interesting.

And thank you for your kind words. Right now we usually keep the topic as a little surprise until the session begins, but I love hearing that you look forward to discovering it each time. That sense of anticipation is part of the fun!
